On Android 15, the Find My Device feature can find dead cellphones

Google is introducing a new feature in Android 15 called Powered Off Finding API, which will help users locate their Android smartphones even when they are turned off. This new API stores pre-calculated Bluetooth connectivity in the Bluetooth controller memory, making it possible to find the device’s location. However, the feature requires special hardware to power the Bluetooth controller in a turned-off phone, which may need a small battery backup. While initially thought to debut on Pixel 9, it may also be available on Pixel 8 running Android 15. Older devices like Pixel Fold series, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel 6 series may not support this feature.

Telset.id, Jakarta – Some people have had difficulty finding an Android cellphone that they forgot where they put it or, worst of all, lost it. Especially when the cellphone is off.

However, the Find My Device feature from Google on Android 15 will be useful for finding cellphones that say they are in the off position. As is known, previously when the device was inactive, this feature could not be activated.

Later in Android 15, Google will solve the problem of detecting dead cellphones by introducing a new Powered Off Finding API.

According to the latest report from Android Police, It is explained that this new API can help find the device’s location even when the device is turned off.

Basically, this API system will work by storing pre-calculated Bluetooth connectivity in the Bluetooth controller memory.

However, the Find My Device feature in Android 15 has problems because it requires special hardware so that a cellphone that is turned off can power the Bluetooth controller. Therefore, it may require a small amount of battery backup for the feature to operate.

While initial rumors suggested that this feature might debut on the Pixel 9, an Android Police report now suggests that the Pixel 8 will also have this feature while running Android 15.

In addition to the hardware requirements, significant software engineering efforts are also required to support the Bluetooth Finder HAL (Hardware abstraction layer). Users should also ensure that they have updated the operating system to Android 15, which has the latest version of Google’s Find My Device feature.

Unfortunately, older phones like the Pixel Fold series, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel 6 series probably won’t have this feature. It remains unclear whether the device lacks the necessary hardware or there is a software-based limitation.

However, it’s possible this feature could be extended to certain older devices in the future, especially recent high-end models like the Pixel Fold. So we need to wait until Android 15 is launched to find out what this feature will be on which phones. (FY/IF)
